Title: GIS Technician
Location: Palm Beach Gardens, FL USA
This position is responsible for the preparation, maintenance and development of GIS projects and special projects. The employee is responsible for performing technical work to the GIS system and to maintain the geographic database. This position serves as an entry level position to assist the GIS Manager and assist City Departments with GIS requests, such as preparing maps, plans, charts, graphic and illustrative materials and performing technical planning work such as studies, surveys and analysis of data.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepare specialized GIS mapping products to meet current needs within the City
Assist in the assessment of future GIS needs and development of future GIS related products
Input attribute data into GIS, assign individual data attributes to the appropriate location on the GIS map layer, providing quality control, accuracy and completeness; convert various map and data types to hardware environment for inclusion into GIS
Participate in GIS coordination with City departments in development of standardized procedures
Monitor GIS hardware and output devices to ensure proper functions and advises the GIS Manager on system activities
Assist in Global Positioning System (GPS) data inventory, defining, cleaning and creating intelligent features
Obtain, assemble, summarize and analyze basic Geographic data involved in City activities, such as land use, population, economic characteristics, traffic, land development and other factors pertinent to a comprehensive planning program
Prepare text, graphic, and illustrative materials for reports and publications for City departments
Serve as backup to the GIS Manager for the Emergency Operations Center to provide mapping assistance during and after an emergency event Performs any other related duties as required or assigned
Participate as a member of the Palm Beach County-wide GIS forum
Education and Experience:
Associates degree in geography, computer science or related field, and
GISP (Geographic Information Systems Professional) certification preferred, and
Any related combination of education, training and experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of computer applications such as CADD, GIS, or current related software, or
Any related combination of training and experience
Knowledge of ArcGIS 10.x / ArcPad 8.x, preferred
Knowledge of GIS software (including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Modelbuilder, Google Earth, Pictometry, etc) preferred
Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of computers, operating systems, with emphasis on microcomputers, minicomputers, graphic workstations and CADD technology such as digitizers and plotters
Knowledge of Dbase database
Some knowledge of the objectives, principles and techniques of city/urban planning
Ability to understand planning and zoning concepts and requirements, and to customize GIS products to meet City needs
Ability to communicate effectively, maintain good working relationships, exercise initiative and sound judgment in making decisions
Ability to respond and report to duty during emergency response conditions
SPECIAL QUALIFCATIONS (Certification, License, Professional Association):
Valid Florida Drivers License with a good driving record
