Title: GIS Tech I/II
Location: Abilene, TX
Under direction of the GIS Staff, creates, edits, or imports data into the Enterprise GIS and related databases using GIS software.according to the GIS Division standard operating procedure and best practices. Produces basic cartographic products to support the various departments within the City of Abilene, Taylor County, and other local government agencies pursuant to a collaborative Interlocal agreement.
This position currently exercises no supervisory responsibilities.
Examples of Duties
Creates, edits, or imports data into the Enterprise GIS and related databases from various data formats, projections, and scales in order to ensure accuracy of created/updated spatial information using GIS software.
Exports data as needed to support various departments within the City of Abilene, as well as private citizens and contractors to support City of Abilene operations.
Produces cartographic and informational products and reports to support a wide variety of City operations.
Primarily responsible for editing multiple features in the Enterprise GIS including, but not limited to, road network, land use, zoning, and addressing.
Fields requests for products and requests for information in the form of phone calls and walk-in requests from Citizens and City Staff for GIS products and data.
OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES
Perform other job related duties as assigned.
Use of geographic information system software such as GeoMedia, Esri suite of products, ERDAS, ER Mapper, Maptitude, etc. as needed to manipulate Vector/Raster GIS data, fulfill project obligations, and meet city requirements
Operation of geographic information system hardware such as digitizers, scanners, plotters, CD/DVD burners, personal computers, mobile devices, GPS equipment, and printers as needed to fulfill project obligations and meet city requirements
Basic principles, methods, techniques, and procedures utilized in the maintenance, and production of geospatial data, tabular data, and graphics as needed to produce and develop needed GIS data.
Manipulate GIS data and operate ESRI ArcGIS Desktop to support day-to-day operations of the city.
Perform accurate GIS data production, including reviewing data for completeness and accuracy; identifying and correcting errors or omissions in the data.
Ability to learn how to apply geographic principles and practices to the maintenance of a geographic information database as needed to keep data as up-to-date and accurate as possible.
Prepare and interpret reports, diagrams, charts, and technical drawings as needed to complete projects and other departmental obligations.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:
GIS Technician I
Two (2) years of experience with relevant computer equipment and software applications required. One (1) year of experience with GIS software, ESRI is preferred.
A high school degree or GED is required.
An Associate's degree in Geography, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Information Systems or a related field is required.
GIS Technician II
Four (4) years of experience with computer equipment and software applications. Two (2) years of experience with GIS software, ESRI is preferred.
A high school degree or GED is required.
A Bachelor's degree in Geography, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Information Systems or a related field is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Texas driver's license is required.
Certificate in GIS is preferred.
Essential duties include the following physical skills and work environment:
Ability to work in a standard office environment.
Work is primarily performed in a climate-controlled office environment.
Physical demands are sedentary in nature with prolonged sitting.
Work may cause eye and finger fatigue because of fairly continuous use of motor senses.
Position requires moderate physical effort in carrying/moving computers and peripheral equipment.
