Salary Range: $58,565 - $87,848
Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the GIS Analyst designs and develops primary map layers and data bases for City-wide GIS operations; prepares GIS programs and applications; and conducts geographical research and analysis.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the GIS Analyst series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from GIS Analyst, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

• Plans, organizes, integrates, monitors, and maintains a comprehensive GIS and related applications; develops long-range GIS system goals.
• Designs and creates visual digital and hard copy presentations.
• Creates procedures for repetitive, complex tasks for use on future projects.
• Designs, develops and performs geographic analyses for special studies and projects.
• Mentors and trains staff on GIS pest practices and use of GIS systems and applications.
• Troubleshoots GIS applications, tools, and data.
• Develops and manages quality control procedures on existing geographic and tabular data on SDE.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Decisions: The incumbent must respond to problem statements and questions from other staff by preparing programs and applications which define data geographically and statistically. Upon completion, must also interpret the results of these analyses and studies.
Knowledge of: GIS programming language; statistical and geographic analytical techniques; spatial analysis; basic theory of databases.
Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; relating technical information to others; understanding GIS and its application to municipal issues; operating a GIS function with ESRI-related software.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Demographics, Information Science, or related field.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in GIS related activities.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements
Licenses and Certifications: None.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: This is primarily an office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
