Powdermill Nature Reserve, the biological field station of Carnegie Museum of Natural History located in the beautiful Laurel Highlands, seeks a GIS Research Scientist to develop and advance the GIS Laboratory and associated programs .

The GIS Research Scientist independently develops geospatial technologies, data, and methods for CMNH research, collections, education, and exhibit initiatives. Technology includes, but is not limited to, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) in ecology, and building Web applications that serve complex geospatial data to the public in an attractive and easily accessed manner. The research products are high quality, innovative, geospatial analyses, maps, and presentations that serve CMNH staff and associates. The GIS Research Scientist is responsible for land use planning and administration regarding research programs at Powdermill Nature Reserve, particularly those of visiting scientists and externally-sponsored research programs. The GIS Research Scientist must have a strong technical geospatial and cartographic background, understand a wide range of natural history disciplines, and have a strong commitment to collaborative, high quality research. The GIS Research Scientist must have demonstrated success in earning competitive extramural funding, publishing technical papers in peer reviewed or industry journals, and mentoring student workers learning GIS technology.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor’s degree in geography, GIS, cartography, field or conservation biology, ecology, environmental science or planning, or related disciplines; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
• Minimum 3 years of experience using GIS with research applications in conservation biology, forestry, ecology, or other natural resource discipline.
• Experience administering computer software and hardware
• Experience in a management position including staff development and evaluation, making hiring decisions, budget planning and forecasting

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Platform (ArcGIS for Desktop, ArcGIS for Server, and ArcGIS Online). Experience using and administering ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Online strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with additional geospatial concepts and software, including remote sensing and Structure from motion photogrammetry (Open Drone Map, Pix4D, Agisoft, Drone2Map)
• Experience with unmanned aerial vehicles and FAA Part 107 certification strongly preferred.
• Experience with web map application development using ArcGIS products, and at least basic knowledge of relevant languages such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, etc.
• Familiarity with best practices for vector and raster geodata design, management, and documentation, including metadata standards.
• Strong skills in geoprocessing, Model Builder, spatial analysis, and statistical analysis and documentation of workflows, familiarity with Python and/or R languages preferred.
• Sound understanding of cartographic principles, with experience creating both print and web maps.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; familiarity with Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator, and Photoshop preferred.
• Experience managing staff, especially student researchers and technicians.
• Strong attention to detail and verbal, written, and visual communication skills
• Excellent organization skills, problem solving skills, self-motivation, and positive attitude.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Work is primarily sedentary in nature in a shared office environment
• For many projects, field work will be required for data collection, which may require hiking through dense forests, over difficult terrain, through streams, in inclement weather, and potentially for long periods of time.
