Title: GIS Technician
Location: 1136 Washington St., Columbia, SC 29201
This position performs responsible work in assisting with the development, implementation, maintenance and use of GIS technology in multiple City departments, performing related professional and technical work as required. The incumbent works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Participates in the development, implementation, maintenance and use of the GIS system in multiple City departments for multiple GIS projects as assigned;
Digitizes and edits both spatial and attribute information, as needed for base GIS layers or in support of other City Departments;
Maintains quality control for information entered into the GIS system and for existing map products;
Researches, develops and establishes methodologies to improve or streamline map production;
Participates in the preparation, digitizing and editing of standard map requests as required;
Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns and complaints in areas of responsibility;
Performs general administrative/clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, attending meetings, and answering the telephone;
Attends training, seminars and conferences as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills;
Performs field data collection utilizing various GPS/mobile equipment;
Edits tax parcel data to include attribute updates, creation of new parcels, editing geometry of existing parcels, and using advance editing tools;
Corrects topology errors of existing data layers such as neighborhood outlines; and
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
Bachelors degree in GIS, Geography, Engineering, Urban Planning, Computer Science or a related field;
One (1) year of relevant prior experience;
Valid South Carolina Class D Drivers License.
The work is considered sedentary in nature and involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis, 20 pounds occasionally, or routine keyboard operations.
