Title: ORISE Research Associate
Location: Willowbrook, IL
A postgraduate research training opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Region 5, Superfund Division. This appointment will be served with the FIELDS Group in the Remedial Response Branch in Willowbrook, Illinois. The mission of the FIELDS Group is to characterize, analyze, and communicate environmental contamination problems that may pose a threat to human health and the environment. The Group provides field assistance, statistically-based sample designs, data collection forms development, contaminant site characterization, and analysis and display of spatial data for individuals such as Remedial Project Managers (RPMs), On-Scene Coordinators (OSCs), and Enforcement Officers.
A portion of the FIELDS Group’s time is dedicated to the on-going development of server-based tools including ESRI's ArcGIS Online for the USEPA (GeoPlatform) and Java tools. Currently the FIELDS Group has two servers hosting a number of webmap viewer applications for emergency response, removal projects, and remedial clean-ups. We maintain and enhance data collection, visualization, and data storage using standalone and ESRI-based tools. Additionally, we have created and regularly need to deploy a hybrid 900 MHz wireless data communication system for chemical and particulate monitoring.
The selected research participant will learn about and participate in the above methods and actions. Preference will be given to applicants who poses many of the below skills:
• ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online (GeoPlatform), and Python
• Survey123 (iForms) and ESRI’s Collector App
• EVS and earthVision (3D/4D softwares)
• GPS and survey-grade GPS and laser systems (i.e., Trimble, EOS, SXBlue, Leica)
• Statistical software including: SAS, R, ProUCL, and VSP
• database experience (i.e., the SQL database EQuIS and/or the Access database SCRIBE)
• Server and IT experience
• comfortable working as a member of a team and independently
• presentations and written analytical reports
The candidate will be paid a monthly stipend through the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education program. You must be a recent graduate (5 years) and/or taking course towards a degree. You are not a USEPA employee but a grantee with no federal employee benefits. However, we do pay for two weeks’ vacation and sick leave. The project period can extend up to three years with a guarantee of one year. This project requires a 40 hour work week and may include field-work that is physically demanding. 40 hours hazmat training will be provided. Salary ranges from 40K to 45K depending on experience and college level.
