Title: Natural Resource GIS Analyst / Programmer
Location: Vallejo, CA
The Sanborn Map Company is looking to fill a Natural Resource GIS Analyst / Programmer position.
Joining Sanborn’s winning onsite team! In this role, you will work for Sanborn to provide GIS services in support of environmental programs. This role will require extensive expertise in conducting natural resource risk modeling, mapping and training, GIS mapping and analysis, Mobile GIS mapping and programing of data recorders, web-site development, maintenance and adherence to specific standards, poster and presentation development, and other graphical design development. This position is located in in Vallejo, CA however; travel may occur to other locations.
•BACHELOR’S DEGREE in Forestry, Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Soils, Geology, Hydrology, Geography, Earth Science or related degree.
•MASTER’S DEGREE is highly desired.
•Minimum of 5 years of intensive and progressive experience in a field requiring extensive use of GIS and related tools.
•Minimum of 3 years of experience in graphic design.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
•Integrated knowledge of GIS, Mobile GIS, Cartography, and Database Management
•Experience conducting risk modeling, mapping and training, GIS mapping and analysis, Mobile GIS mapping and programming of data recorders, web-site development, maintenance and adherence to specific standards, poster and presentation development, and other graphical design development
•In-depth understanding and extensive experience with vegetation and forest insect & disease mapping, modeling, and monitoring
•Abilities to design innovative solutions and create customized tools for solving complex spatial and environmental problems
•Knowledge of graphic design applications and concepts and abilities to develop and design annual reports and other documents
•Strong communication skills for project reporting, collaborating with other staff and outside project partners, developing training materials, delivering technical trainings, and facilitating workshops
•ESRI ArcGIS platform for geographic data processing, management, and analysis
•Advanced spatial modeling, geoprocessing analysis, and spatial statistics
•Familiarity with ERSI ArcGIS raster calculator and ability to manipulate raster integer values
•ESRI model builder or python to automate repetitive tasks
•Familiarity with FS corporate database (EDW) structure
MOBILE GIS EXPERTISE:
•Android tablets with ESRI Survey 123 for field data collection and integration with geodatabase and other databases
CARTOGRAPHY SPECIFIC EXPERTISE:
•Create complex maps and posters using various tools including ESRI ArcMap, ERDAS suite, and Adobe Creative Suite
•Knowledge of cartographic design principles
GRAPHIC DESIGN SPECIFIC EXPERTISE:
•Adobe InDesign for document and publication development
•Illustrator for graphics development
•HTML and CSS for website management
OTHER SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
•Strong skills with MS Office suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
CONDUCT GIS MAPPING AND ANALYSIS TO SUPPORT FOREST HEALTH PROTECTION
•Interact with Forest Health Assessment and Applied Sciences Team and aerial detection survey crew, trouble shoot survey systems
•Create web mapping applications to present aerial detection survey data using ArcGIS Online (AGOL)
•Conduct assessments of insect and disease data
•Create templates and maps for use by government personnel
•Create maps and posters
•Contact various GIS personnel to accumulate spatial data for dead wood volume estimates & locations for biomass inventory
•Evaluate data from multiple databases to create maps and posters
•Work cooperatively with partners to evaluate, analyze and distribute data
•Manage the data and metadata
ANNUAL REPORT COMPILATION, DESIGN, EDITING AND GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION
•Work cooperatively to compile annual forest health data and information, including the pest conditions and forest health highlights reports
•Develop graphical design for annual reports
•Manage data and information for forest pest reporting
•Help produce final survey reports and maps
•Manage State & Private Forestry website using HTML and CSS
PROVIDE TECHNICAL TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
•Develop training for partners
•Aid service area personnel in using GIS
•Aid service area personnel with insect and disease field data collection using tablets running AGOL Survey 123
•Aid service area personnel with ground verification of aerial detection survey data using tablets.
•Develop materials for distribution and internal use
CONDUCT ALL RMAP ACTIVITIES RELATING TO NATIONAL INSECT AND DISEASE RISK MODELING (NIDRM) AND MAPPING:
•Develop protocols for improving host layers for next NIDRM
•Evaluate 2018 host layers in coordination with other staff and service areas plus state partners for improvement for next NIDRM
•Run models and produce products as needed by staff
•Conduct workshops and training
FINAL PROGRAM AND PROJECT REPORT PREPARATION
•Document work performed; web-ready publication
•Develop end product posters and maps
•Aid forest health protection staff with technical issues
•Conduct meetings with partners as needed.
CONTRACTOR PERSONNEL SECURITY AND SUITABILITY REQUIREMENTS
The following forms and inquiries, or their equivalent, will be used to initiate the credentialing process:
•OPM Standard Form 85 or 85P
•National Criminal History Check (NCHC)
•Release to Obtain Credit Information
•PIV card application
If selected to fill the position, a candidate would be required to pass a drug screen and satisfy the requirements of a National Criminal History Check (NCHC) to verify the identity of the individual applying for clearance and to determine the individual’s suitability for the position.
