Join Sanborn’s award-winning team! Sanborn is looking for a GIS Technician to work onsite with our federal government client in Montana.

Government field offices maintain an extensive assortment of local interest data that lacks a national counterpart. This data needs to be managed and maintained. These datasets are used for display, analysis and decision making at the field office level. These local datasets are oftentimes only partially complete. There is a need to update and quality check these datasets to allow field offices to produce better quality map\analysis products and to make better informed decisions. The GIS Technician will support the client’s field office and will coordinate with staff to assist in developing geospatial datasets and assessing existing datasets for completeness and quality.

This position is located in in Miles City, MT; there are 1-2 openings available.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources field such as, but not limited to, ecology, natural resources management, wildlife biology, botany, forestry, fisheries, soils, etc. from an accredited university. Or an Associate’s degree PLUS 3 years’ experience. A GIS Technical Certificate may substitute for one (1) year experience.

REQUIRED TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE:
•Professional experience of greater than 1 year with Esri’s ArcGIS Desktop software
oPreference will be given to those candidates demonstrating at least 1 year of experience using ArcGIS Desktop10.3 or higher
•Demonstrated professional knowledge of concepts and principles of geospatial data management
•Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in the following areas;
oDemonstrated professional experience assessing and documenting data needs
oProfessional experience writing FGDC and/or ISO metadata for vector and/or raster products
oExperience in developing written technical documentation (such as metadata, technical documents, workflow diagrams, white papers, etc.)
oAbility to communicate technical information effectively (both orally and in writing) to lay persons and geospatial technical experts alike
oWorking in a multi-user, enterprise Geodatabase environment using ESRI’s ArcSDE software

TASKS:
•Assimilate existing data, which may exist in multiple formats such as paper records, digital raster products, and digital vector products into geospatial layers that conform to defined data standards
•Convert all formats of data acquired into geospatial files using either file based geodatabase or a versioned enterprise geodatabase as directed.
•Create, update, and maintain metadata in accordance with Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) and metadata standards
•Reorganize existing geospatial files into defined file structures, consolidating similar datasets and eliminating duplicate datasets
•Assist with general data management activities. Identify and acquire data in native formats from field offices, including exploring, searching, and documenting data via communication with a wide variety of field office staff.
•Prepare maps demonstrating progress or illustrating data complexities and issues
•Attend required federal trainings and orientation as scheduled

CONTRACTOR PERSONNEL SECURITY AND SUITABILITY REQUIREMENTS
The following forms and inquiries, or their equivalent, will be used to initiate the credentialing process:
•OPM Standard Form 85 or 85P

•National Criminal History Check (NCHC)
•Release to Obtain Credit Information
•PIV card application

If selected to fill the position, a candidate would be required to pass a drug screen and satisfy the requirements of a National Criminal History Check (NCHC) to verify the identity of the individual applying for clearance and to determine the individual’s suitability for the position.

Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or possess a current work visa.
