Join Sanborn’s award-winning team! Sanborn is looking for a Wildlife GIS Analyst. The Wildlife GIS Analyst will provide assistance to technical experts in supporting the full range of geospatial mapping and analysis activities needed to support the Wildlife and Threatened & Endangered Species Programs and the Branch of Assessments and Monitoring.

You will be part of a team providing geospatial mapping and analysis activities in support of the agency’s strategic approach to wildlife management, focused on habitat conditions across entire landscapes. You will support tasks such as organizing the project database, conducting GIS analysis, generating thematic maps, conducting prototypical modeling and analysis, and performing testing within the framework specified by the Task Manager. Overall, you will contribute to professional digital maps and relational data (tabular output/acreage tables), suitable for presentation.

General duties include:
Data Acquisition, Storage & Management – Acquiring, maintaining and organizing wildlife and wildlife habitat data
Mapping – Creating maps for use in publications, websites, presentations, meetings, and for general information for management decision support
Geospatial Analysis – Analyzing wildlife and wildlife habitat data in relation to threats or multiple land uses
Geospatial Modeling – Modeling predicted current or future wildlife habitat
Data and Map Distribution Services – Providing maps and analysis results

REQUIRED:
•Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources field such as, but not limited to, ecology, natural resources management, wildlife biology, botany, forestry, fisheries, soils, etc. from an accredited university.
•Master’s degree is preferred.
•Minimum of five (5) years of directly related intensive and progressive experience.
•Background in Wildlife and Endangered Species is a Plus

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
•Experience of more than 4 years with ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop software. Preference will be given to those demonstrating at least 1 year experience using ArcGIS Desktop 10.4 or higher.
•Demonstrate professional knowledge of concepts and principles of geospatial data management.
•Demonstrate experience developing spatial models and generating analysis maps.
•Demonstrate professional knowledge of geography, digital cartography, physical science and/or biology in order to successfully integrate geospatial technologies to accomplish missions and goals.
•Demonstrate knowledge of scripting tools used to automate processes in ESRI ArcGIS software such as Python or Model Builder.
•Demonstrate ability to produce maps that are accurate, aesthetically pleasing, and that meet customer expectations.
•Demonstrate working competence in automation of geospatial processes to expand analysis capabilities, and increase speed and efficiency.
•Demonstrate ability to communicate technical information effectively to lay persons and geospatial technical experts alike.
•Demonstrate experience in developing written technical documentation (such as metadata, workflow diagrams, white papers, etc.).
•Demonstrate ability to work with projects of varying timelines from yearlong implementation schedules to products with hours for quick turnaround production.
•Demonstrate ability to work within a team context of diverse physical, biological, ecological, technical, and environmental sciences personnel and with external partners such as other agencies, NGOs, universities, and the general public.

TASKS
•Capture, organize, and archive various assigned data themes into a database to accepted standards of accuracy, precision, and quality, or a specific quality level or requires a higher or lower standard for this specific project. Possible data themes are wide ranging, of high resolution, and very large. It is anticipated that the preponderance of data themes to be used for this project already exist and are readily available from the government and other sources.
•Assist with acquiring geospatial data from partners including, but not limited to, other federal agencies, non-government organizations, and academic institutions.
•If necessary, perform database editing, merge data files, and perform edge matching, error analysis or other activities, including theme and attribute labeling, within the framework specified by the project Task Manager.
•Provide cartographic services using custom software applications, including compilation from various source materials, generation of grids, digital cartographic editing, relief portrayal, creating map surround elements, text placement, color separation, symbol creation, quality assurance, and cartographic software testing.
•Create thematic maps to accepted standards of accuracy, precision, quality, and aesthetic value as specified by the Task Manager or other internal customers. Thematic maps will range in size and complexity, including wildlife habitat maps for web pages to maps depicting complex analyses results.
•Develop spatial models and generate maps relating to the project data themes (analysis maps). Maps and acreage determinations are necessary to support determination of species and habitat status and condition, and risks and opportunities to reduce potential adverse effects of management actions and land uses, and to better understand risks to species and habitats.
•Conduct GIS based analysis through the use of various data themes to support modeling and analysis of habitats and landscapes at regional, National or other spatial scales. The primary effort will be to organize the project database, conduct GIS analysis, generate thematic maps, conduct prototypical modeling and analysis, testing, and associated services within the framework specified.
•Provide digital metadata files for all digital spatial data which comply with Government specifications. Provide data in Arc Export files.
•Assist with development and maintenance of web-enabled capability to capture and share wildlife and Threatened & Endangered Species data (including expenditure data).
