RedCastle Resources Inc. is a progressive, employee-friendly company providing on-site geospatial and information technology (IT) support to the USDA Forest Service. Based in Salt Lake City, UT, our primary client is the Geospatial Technology Applications Center (GTAC). GTAC is a national center of excellence within the Forest Service for geospatial data analysis and provisioning (satellite, aerial imagery, lidar, and other geographic data). GTAC assists national forests, regional and Washington offices, Research Stations, International Programs, and other federal agencies by using advanced geospatial technologies for improved mapping, inventorying, and monitoring of natural resources.
The Remote Sensing Mapping Specialist will work individually and as part of a team conducting mapping projects using high and moderate resolution imagery primarily in the western US, and Alaska. The individual will assist in developing and implementing image processing and GIS modeling workflows for developing landscape-level vegetation and ecological unit applications. The mapping process consists of integrating information from vegetation, soils, geology, terrain, and climate to develop landscape and/or vegetation units and attributes. This requires using multispectral imagery, automated pixel and object-orientated image classification techniques, spatial modeling, statistical analysis, and data mining tools. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on projects ranging from base-level to broad-scale projects. Occasional field work or travel is required. The following characteristics are desirable:
• Personal and professional interest in natural resources and the application of geospatial technologies to resource management problems;
• Experience with mapping software such as R, ArcGIS/Pro, Google Earth Engine, eCognition, and ERDAS;
• Experience or coursework in python, java script, ArcPy or other scripting languages;
• Background in ecology, forestry, soils, or natural resource management area with knowledge of landscape vegetation, ecology, geomorphology, and field data collection methods;
• Excellent communication skills including technical writing and verbal communication.
Successful candidates are expected to be self-motivated, have demonstrated initiative, be able to work independently and also as part of a team, be able to collaborate with natural resource specialists, and be adaptable to changing client priorities.
Education and Experience:
The successful candidate will have at least 2 years of experience in remote sensing with good current working knowledge of geospatial software as described above. The minimum degree requirement is a BA/BS (preferably a MA/MS) in a natural resource or technical area such as forestry, biology, soils, geography/GIS, or ecology, with coursework in geospatial technologies.
