It is important that the data, analysis, and model output that we produce can be discovered and utilized by researchers and practitioners.
The Water Institute of the Gulf is seeking a Geospatial Analyst to lead and advise on projects with complex geographic information systems (GIS) components, including geospatial scientific design, advanced geostatistics, interpolation, and multidimensional analysis; remote data acquisition and remote sensing analysis; and integration of big data and IoT data streams. The candidate selected for this position will work closely with the technical staff across all departments at the Water Institute to support the development and implementation of advanced geospatial analysis frameworks across TWIs project portfolio. The successful candidate will use their skills across a diverse set of projects that focus on a variety of environmental settings, spatial and temporal scales, and that support a range of stakeholders.
Candidates should be prepared to:
Demonstrate technical expertise in Esri geospatial software environments, specifically ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap.
Define conceptual, logical, and physical processes for advanced geospatial and geostatistical analysis.
Demonstrate proficiency in the automation of complex geospatial analysis and associated deep knowledge of Model Builder and common GIS scripting languages.
Provide a portfolio of previous digital mapping products and cartographic output with a focus on graphic design (can include web applications, story maps, dashboards, and physical maps).
This position reports to the GIS Lead and Chief Operating Officer and will work with other data science, data analytics and information technology professionals supporting research across social science, biological science, physical science, engineering, planning, and policy focus areas.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Work as part of a team to provide geospatial analyses and support for multiple program areas. Lead the technical design and solutioning of geospatially intensive natural resources, water management, socioeconomic, and climate adaptation projects.
Assist program staff in data collection, data processing, analysis, data management, reporting, and presentation of geospatial output from projects and studies.
Meet with users to define project geospatial requirements, technical specifications, operational problems, and customized solutions. Help users understand pros and cons of alternative solutions. Provide project and geodata guidance to staff.
Document analytical methods and prepare technical reports, procedures, and other written materials.
Provide end user support for GIS software to personnel. Conduct necessary research on complex technical problems to develop and implement solutions.
Maintain GIS software on physical and virtual machines.
Test new geospatial technologies and analysis techniques to recommend efficient and cost-effective methods for system and network operations.
Develop and support GIS training for technical and non-technical end users.
Develop new applications and enhance existing applications as necessary.
Adapt, enhance, develop and/or implement cutting-edge techniques that utilize remote sensing, environmental data, and modeling to derive products needed in program area.
Distill and communicate GIS analytical methods and outputs to diverse non-technical stakeholder groups, including the public.
Bachelors degree in Geography, Spatial Sciences, Math, Statistics, Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience with 4+ years of intensive experience in Geographic Information Systems.
Deep knowledge of the concepts and processes of geospatial analysis including creating, manipulating, editing, organizing, maintaining, geoprocessing, analyzing, and visualization of spatial data.
Professional development coursework in Data Management, Data Science, and Geospatial Data Architecture.
In-depth knowledge of Esri Enterprise and Web GIS architectures with experience in day-to-day management of these systems.
Working knowledge of open-source GIS environments including QGIS and GRASS. Knowledge of open-source solutions and governance structures including Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and Open Street Maps (OSM).
Experience working with geospatial Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions including Esri ArcGIS Online, Mapbox, and CartoDB.
Strong programming skills and experience working with Python and Model Builder.
Experience working in the Amazon AWS environment.
