Position Description:

Responsibilities GIS Analyst/Spatial Data Scientist sought to support academic research on freshwater fish and aquatic ecosystems in Alaska. The incumbent will extract, manipulate, and exploit spatial environmental datasets, and provide timely response and prioritize requests for GIS maps, data analysis and GIS applications. Additionally, the analyst will be expected to compile, attribute, edit and maintain data in geographic and operational databases and their associated documentation and assist in establishing and maintaining GIS database quality control and quality assurance procedures. As such, strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly communicate technical ideas, whether to other technical peers or non-technical project managers or customers are required. This position will develop spatial data products in support of several ongoing research projects with goals to better understand freshwater fish distributions and effects of fire and climate change on boreal aquatic ecosystem dynamics. Project personnel include aquatic and terrestrial ecologists, hydrologists, climate scientists, graduate students, undergraduate field and lab technicians, and support staff.

Qualifications B.S. in geographic information systems, geography, or a closely related field that required equivalent coursework in geographic information systems. Additionally, applicants should have two years of progressively responsible experience in the uses and operations of geographic information systems to produce products and services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The successful candidate will be a highly productive, self-directed, and motivated individual. Experience working on environmental or ecological datasets is preferred.
