Role: AIM Aquatic Data Technician

Role Summary: The candidate will support the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) Program by providing geospatial and ecological technical expertise to end-users in the field and will help organize and implement yearly field collection data for the AIM Aquatics group. The role is responsible for the following:

- Organizes data and performs data management with database software, GIS (geographic information systems), and statistical software.
- Supports implementation of sampling designs for AIM monitoring.
- Provide technical assistance to end users accessing and using data and geospatial tools, including one-on-one discussions, trainings, tutorials and webinars.
- Effectively communicate complex technical problems and solutions to non-technical partners and user base.
- Takes initiative to suggest new ideas or to push forward with new technology.
- Presents and implements tools and workflows that can improve efficiency, user interfaces, data accessibility and use. Suggestions for tools also include how they could be used for multiple tasks rather than in pieces or fragments.
- Independently prepares and runs data QC, and implements identified data edits in a production environment.
- Leads the creation of supplemental materials such as maps, reports, diagrams, charts, etc.

Other Job Tasks That May Be Performed:

- Supports the overall AIM team by assisting with Riparian/Wetlands AIM data.
- Assists with the use of chemical, physical and biological monitoring data of streams and rivers to inform Clean Water Act and BLM policy attainment.
- Processes and maintains photos, sample design implementation data, and field data for the Branch of Assessment and Monitoring.
- Updates and modifies AIM website.
- Documents processes and workflows including metadata.
- Helps enforce national naming convention of ArcGIS Server GIS Services, filename, and folder.
- Provides additional data support functions.
- Submits weekly report which summarizes finished and ongoing tasks.
- Attends regular meetings to review work progress and schedule as well as meetings which pertain to the supported program/projects listed above (i.e., AIM, etc.).


- Candidates must be eligible for federal security clearance (DOI) and proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
- 2+ year’s experience with ESRI ArcGIS Suite (e.g. Desktop, Pro).
- Experience with AGOL data management, publication.
- Knowledge of mobile data collection workflows and template configuration.
- Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Field Maps, ESRI ArcGIS Survey123 strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of monitoring data management both in the field and in office setting.
- Ability to manage complex projects, including project management skills, skills in sequencing tasks, skill in organizing and facilitating manager and technical work groups.
- Ability to communicate technical information effectively to lay persons and resource specialists alike.
- Experience in developing written technical documentation (such as reports, training materials, white papers, etc.)
- Experience working with chemical, physical, or biological data to inform Clean Water Act attainment.

Preferred Experience:

- Preference will be shown to candidates who have experience collecting and managing aquatic AIM data or similar data.
- Preference will be shown to candidates who can demonstrate experience programming in Python and/or Arcade.
- Candidates demonstrating some experience with either ArcGIS Web AppBuilder or in creating and configuring other ESRI AGOL based applications (e.g. Dashboards, StoryMaps) is a plus.

Targeted Compensation Range:

$55,000 to $65,000 per year

Work Environment:

- Onsite at the BLM National Operations Center, Denver, CO; work from home may be considered.
- Position has at least 3 anticipated trips, to be no more than 4 days/ 3 nights each, per calendar year. There is also the possibility for additional travel, including the potential for 2 separate week-long trips. Overall travel to be no more than 10% of the time.
