Visiting Instructor or Visiting Assistant Professor of Data Science with emphasis on Geospatial Analysis

Unit Mission Statement William & Mary is a public institution with approximately 6300 undergraduates and 2100 graduate students, with a strong liberal arts tradition and a commitment to teaching excellence.
The Data Science unit is the home of teaching, research and outreach activities in Data Science, while the
Center for Geospatial Analysis is focusing on a subset of these activities that relate to the many forms and uses of geospatial information.

Position Summary: The Data Science unit at William & Mary invites applications for an one-year, non-tenure eligible Visiting Instructor or Visiting Assistant Professor of Data Science with emphasis on Geospatial Analysis, beginning August 10, 2022. We are seeking a colleague with a commitment to excellence in teaching with the ability to attract, motivate, retain, and mentor students. The position carries a load of six courses for academic year 2022-23 (three per semester).

Four of these courses will be taught for the Center for Geospatial Analysis. Courses will include an Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and additional courses that could include an Introduction to Remote Sensing, Advanced Topics in GIS, Python for GIS Scripting and Digital Cartography depending on the expertise of the successful applicant.

Two additional courses will be taught as a part of the Data Science unit at William & Mary. The successful applicant will illustrate an ability to teach students a breadth of methodological approaches to the use of data in a coding environment, as well as facilitate discussions on the societal implications of “big spatial data.”

Required Qualifications Required Proficiency in ESRI GIS products (e.g., ArcGIS, ArcPro and ArcGIS
Online). An M.S. degree in a related field is the minimum requirement.

Preferred Qualifications ABD or Ph.D. in a related field is preferred by the time of appointment. Prior university teaching experience and/or applied experience outside of academic settings is also preferred. Expertise with R or Python is preferred.
