Position Description:

POSITION SUMMARY
The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is hiring a Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst. This person will join a growing team of environmental professionals based out of our headquarters at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.

The GIS Analyst will be responsible for developing habitat suitability models for four rare plant species found on Edwards Air Force Base in southern California. The four species include Desert cymopterus (Cymopterus deserticola), Barstow woolly sunflower (Eriophyllum mohavense), Alkali mariposa lily (Calochortus striatus), and either Lancaster milkvetch (Astragalus preussii var. laxiflorus), Mojave spineflower (Chorizanthe spinosa), spreading pygmyleaf (Loeflingia squarrosa), yellow spinescape (Goodmania luteola), or Rosamond eriastrum (Eriastrum rosamondense).

The Analyst will develop the four habitat suitability models in a scientifically rigorous manner. The specific modeling approach used for each species will be determined following review of scientific literature and GIS data. Available GIS data include occurrence records, true-color and color-infrared aerial imagery, canopy models, surface elevation models, digital elevation models, vegetation classification, land use, and others. File format of the available data varies by source, but models will be delivered in raster format (.img preferred). The Analyst will follow prescribed GIS standards to prepare project deliverables.

Models will be ground-truthed to determine accuracy, and the GIS Analyst may be able to participate in field surveys. Opportunities to assist with other project tasks, such as report writing, may also become available.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate must meet the minimum qualifications listed below.
• B.S./B.A. in Geography, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, or a related field
• Experience developing GIS-based habitat suitability models using Maxent, DOMAIN, or similar programs and procedures
• Proficiency managing and analyzing vector and raster data using ArcGIS (10.x/ArcPro), R, and ERDAS Imagine
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to pay attention to detail, follow directions, and work independently to meet project schedules
• Ability to pass a background check
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date
• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• M.S. in Geography, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, or a related field
• Specialized knowledge of one or more of the plant species listed above
• Experience in conducting field work
• Experience in preparing scientific reports and professional deliverables
• Ability to lift 40 pounds and traverse uneven, steep terrain in a desert environment

PAY RATE AND EMPLOYMENT TERM
Pay rate is $28 to $31 per hour. This is a full-time (40 hours/week), nine-month appointment. Dependent upon future funding, this position may be hired on a competitive basis as a full-time Administrative Professional.

WORK LOCATION
This position is associated with CEMML’s main office on Colorado State University’s campus in Fort Collins, Colorado. Remote applicants located outside of the greater Fort Collins area will be considered. Paid travel to Fort Collins or Edwards Air Force Base may be required.
Reimbursement of travel costs will be based on the cost of traveling to and from Fort Collins.
