Title: Student GIS Internship
Location: Boca Raton, FL
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
This position is responsible for assisting City G.I.S. staff in supporting various desktop and web based applications currently deployed. This individual works under the supervision of the G.I.S. Coordinator thru the G.I.S. Specialist and will have a primary focus on spatial addressing enhancements and feature development and maintenance.
This position will perform a variety of tasks utilizing GIS and GPS technologies. Specific duties will include, but are not limited to:
Assist with tasks associated with further development of City infrastructure mapping
Utilize ESRI software suite for high-quality custom mapping and spatial analysis.
Creation of web maps for enhanced delivery of information
Assist in development of a data portal for improved data distribution
Prepare metadata for use in maps, reports and geodatabases
Assist in editing existing data sets and/or collection of new data layers from a multitude of available data sources
Develop auxiliary address points using internet searches, existing datasets and field verification when necessary.
Check for and maintain spatial accuracy and integrity
Validate, correct/manipulate and update existing data
Input new data
Georeference and digitize data from hardcopy maps and drawings
Other job-related duties as assigned
Provides G.I.S support for City Staff as needed
Develops ad hoc maps for staff as requested
Work with ArcGIS Server and Portal to develop G.I.S web viewers
Online training courses as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
This position requires knowledge of and proficiency in the following areas:
Experience with ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop 10.x software (creating and editing features in ArcGIS; making maps)
Basic computer knowledge to run word processing, spreadsheet and pdf assembly programs
Ability to physically access remote sites in order to perform duties
Ability to work independently and perform duties in a manner consistent with providing our residents, guests and partners with exceptional customer service
Effective written and oral communication skills
Close attention to detail
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships inside and outside of the department and organization
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Qualified applicants must be currently enrolled (two years' coursework) in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program related to GIS, geography, or equivalent field. An equivalent combination of education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and at least one year of practical experience in a related field.
