Position Description:


Responsible for data creation and maintenance of GIS data as well as fulfilling map and data requests from various city departments. Incumbent will be highly skilled and capable of producing accurate, customized, visually appealing maps and reports, creating and editing coverages, shape files, personal and arcSDE geodatabases. May provide GIS training and end user support to other city staff members. Independent judgment, discretion and due diligence must be consistently exercised in the performance of the job duties and responsibilities.


• Oversees the collection of raw data for input into GIS; performs data entry, data conversions and data organization for data entry into the system; verifies or collects field data; compiles, digitizes, rectifies and enters interdepartmental information into the GIS database; manipulates and analyzes data to generate reports, maps and other technical documents
• Provides information on drainage, water, sanitary sewer, streets and property; response to mapping and information requests by City employees, private companies and other governmental agencies, as required
• Programs applications for use in GIS; performs various calculations and computations using GIS
• Updates and maintains various datasets and maps, including the official city streets, property, centerline, subdivisions, water, sanitary sewer, storm water, and utility data using GIS software; creates and develops database layers for the City infrastructure in the GIS system
• Analyzes and performs quality checks on all GIS data
• Provide technical assistance and support for GIS users, including troubleshooting, diagnostics, problem resolution and general question response
• Analyze user department requests and provide solutions to meet operational needs
• Establish mapping procedures and standards for all map products
• Assist and coordinate 911 addresses and CAD needs
• Coordinate with other departments on their GIS needs
• Assist in the purchase of new hardware and software by evaluating current technologies, identifying enhancements, and writing specifications
• Regular attendance and punctuality is essential
• Performs other duties as required by supervisor


• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geosciences, Information Systems, Computer Science or related field of study, with emphasis in Geographic Information Systems and one year experience in a closely related position
• Prefer three years progressively responsibility, closely related experience (municipal or governmental experience preferred)
• Requires good oral and written communication skills; knowledge of English grammar, punctuation and spelling, and the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
• Experience with ArcGIS Desktop, ArcSDE and ArcIMS, or equivalent education/work experience
• Knowledge of multiple software applications and operating systems
• Knowledge of application development using the ESRI Suite of ArcGIS software
• Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and 2012


• Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and/or governmental regulations
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public
• Ability to work with mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
• Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variable sin situation where only limited standardization exists
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
