Organization: Great Basin Institute
Title: Geospatial Mapping Intern
Location: Salt Lake City, UT USA
Application Deadline:
Posted: 2018-08-02

Position Description:

In cooperation with the BLM Utah State Office, GBI is recruiting up to two Geospatial Mapping Technicians to participate in our AmeriCorps Intern program by providing geospatial support to the BLM’s Recreation and Visitor Services Program. The Intern’s primary focus is supporting BLM-Utah’s vision to create and disseminate accurate, attractive, and user-friendly spatially referenced maps that highlight the world-class outdoor recreation opportunities available on public lands across the state. The Intern(s) will utilize geographic information system (GIS) and graphic design software to design and create maps under the guidance of BLM staff. Completed maps will be made available for public consumption in hard copy format, as well as through a wide variety of digital platforms to allow the public to easily download maps and track their real-time movement using the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology in mobile devices. In order to create technically accurate maps, the Intern(s) may collect GIS data in the field and/or complete extensive GIS quality-control measures in the office. The Intern(s) will also assist in efforts to market maps to the 7.5 million annual visitors from around the world that recreate on BLM-administered lands in Utah.

This national service opportunity offers the Intern(s) the occasion to gain experience in public land management and further understanding of the BLM’s GIS and geospatial services program. The majority of work will be in an indoor office setting, but will afford the opportunity for field site visits, including camping. Applicants with a prior experience using or exposure to GIS, graphic design, and cartography may be preferentially considered. The successful applicants, upon completion of the internship, will qualify for non-competitive hiring eligibility associated with the Public Land Corps Act.

Location:
Work will be based at the BLM Utah State Office in Salt Lake City, Utah. The BLM manages nearly 23 million acres of public land in Utah, ranging from alpine wilderness to sprawling red rock deserts that are widely recognized as some of the most spectacular scenery in the world (https://www.blm.gov/utah).
